Law in the Mall is one of Law Day’s newest initiatives that not only encourages youth participation, but increases awareness about law and the court system. This year’s event will be held at Yorkgate Mall in the Young and Finch community from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2007.
What’s the fuss about?
Last year’s mock trial was based on a purse snatching routine. Two juries were created; one consisted of students from local schools and the other group included invited community leaders and mall shop-owners. Lawyers and judges filled the court roles and jury members provided a verdict. Participants and guests were also encouraged to ask questions of the justice system volunteers.
This year the protocol will be similar and there will be a job fair that will offer employment opportunities available within the criminal justice system. Officers of the law will also be available to discuss career opportunities with students and community members.
Kudos for Law in the Mall
The Law in the Mall mock trial presents the legal system in an accessible, easy-to-understand manner to the community at large and allows the public to participate in the legal process in an informative and entertaining fashion.
Law in the Mall 2005 was videotaped, courtesy of sponsorship by Alert, and copies of the CD-ROM will be made available free of charge to high schools.
Everybody’s doing it
This year we are working hard to include many more schools and at-risk youth to participate. If you think your school or community group might be interested, register early!
